I cannot get
used to the Italian breakfast. I have been in Italy for a month now, and a shot
of coffee and a sweet pastry still seem the fodder of a malnourished
sweet-tooth. My Anglo-Saxon constitution demands eggs, bacon, toast, tea (the
hot one with no peach flavouring), or at the very least some muesli with
yogurt. And fruit. And perhaps some toast too.
I don’t mean to be obtuse or ignorant – I truly do hope
to adapt and become accustomed to the Italian way. But at least in the meantime
there are many positive counterbalancing aspects to my new Italian life. One of
which – and I never thought I would say this – is work. Constructing silos of
all things.
Twelve hour working days in the humid northern-Italian
summer (after no breakfast), are tempered by the intermittent yet refreshing
Adriatic breeze and 500 grams of pasta every day – of which even the simplest
variations taste truly divine. Some may say I have reason to complain, but
nonetheless I enjoy working outdoors. Time passes quickly and I seem to have no
time between work/eat/sleep to think too
much of home or other such cerebral activities which would inevitably result in
a melancholic state of mind.
Above all, I do love
this place. Even if they won’t give me eggs for breakfast.
